TRADITIONAL drawing and painting techniques, as well as a focus on realism, are explored in FOUNDATIONAL classes, and given equal weight to more explorative and less rigid ways of making.
We use it as a MEANs of learning ways of EXPLORING TECHNIQUE that will ULTIMATELY help students when they find their own voice allowing them to move on to explore more self- directed techniques and styles.

Makerspace
The Side Hustle
For one course I created makerspace where students could take their passions for art and create a home-run business that could be scaled if necessary. Students learn about product creation, mass/multiple reproduction, possible markets, how to price their work, community partnerships, online or in-person locations to sell their product, how to price their work, source materials and sustain a small business with possibility to scale it.
THE SIDE HUSTLE
This student made a functioning lamp by created original pattern on adobe illustrator, tested on different materials, used a laser cutter to cut each piece, assembled and finished by hand, researched pricing and potential market and finally listed and sold item on Etsy Marketplace.
Student drew a faceted image of video game character and then created several color schemes on photoshop. They then matched favorite color scheme with glass available and proceeded to cut, snap, grind, and foil each piece of glass before soldering it. Student then created a website that he will populate with more work to invite custom commissions.
THE SIDE HUSTLE
This student researched different beading methods and combined hand beading with looming to create a bespoke necklace based on historical art movements. They also created a stained glass lamp shade to match. Student researched how to sell work on consignment at local store.
This student sculpted icons derived from comic books and video games, created molds of the sculpts to mass produce some of the works. The pieces were wasted in both resin and pewter. They then researched different conventions and booths to sell their wares and calculate what amount would need to be made and sold to make profit.
Several students learned a method of painting layers of an image onto separate layers of resin to create the impression of three dimensional fish. They learned the techniques and created a storefront on Etsy Marketplace where they could all sell their work in one place to reduce fees and reduce the amount of product each needed. The big learning was how to price competitively against products in the market that were similar to your own.
